I received this message from a commenter:
I had a discussion with someone regarding the earth being circle was written the Quran. Even so I don’t have much information regarding this topic I told the person it was mentioned in the Quran, while he still believes that its science that discovered that the earth is circular. Can you please respond to my email?
Ok.
Asalamu alaykum,
If you did not have the knowledge to back up this statement then you should not have said it in the first place. I do not intend to do the research for you on this issue perhaps someone else will feel inclined to do it.
There is no doubt that the Quran is a miracle and among the most amazing signs of Allah and a proof of the truthfulness of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. In its unique and inimitable language, style, content, and continued preservation in its original langauge and form.
It has been said that in modern times, the great influence and focus on the scientific miracles (including numerology hoaxes) is due to to our weakness in the Arabic langage and the advance of secularist scientific thought.
One could spend a lifetime just focusing on the miracles of the inimitable Arabic language used in the Quran without recourse to the actual scientific miracles contained within the Quran and certainly not to imagined ones.
In sha Allah, I will begin a new category in the sidebar called I’jaaz al-Quran to highlight some of the actual miracles of the Quran.
Additional Side Note:
The Quran was sent as a guidance and mercy for all of mankind it is not a book of science or history yet it is full of scientific facts and miracles and nuggets of historical information.
The reason many people focus on the scientific aspect is because they are weak in their knowledge of the Arabic language.
Consider the following Qur’anic verse regarding the alternation of day and night:
“Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and He merges Day into Night?”
[Al-Qur’an 31:29]
Merging here means that the night slowly and gradually changes to day and vice versa. This phenomenon can only take place if the earth is spherical. If the earth was flat, there would have been a sudden change from night to day and from day to night.
The following verse also alludes to the spherical shape of the earth:
“He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): He makes the Night overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night.”
[Al-Qur’an 39:5]
The Arabic word used here is Kawwara meaning ‘to overlap’ or ‘to coil’– the way a turban is wound around the head. The overlapping or coiling of the day and night can only take place if the earth is spherical. The earth is not exactly round like a ball, but geo-spherical, i.e. it is flattened at the poles. The following verse contains a description of the earth’s shape:
“And the earth, moreover, hath He made egg shaped.”
[Al-Qur’an 79:30]
The Arabic word for egg here is dahaahaa which means an ostrich-egg. The shape of an ostrich-egg resembles the geo-spherical shape of the earth.
Thus the Qur’an correctly describes the shape of the earth, though the prevalent notion when the Qur’an was revealed was that the earth was flat.
Asalamu alaykum,
Alhamdulillah, may Allah the Exalted reward you for posting that explanation. The Quran is a miracle that contains so many miracles, it’s amazing. How blessed we are to have this book with us today and preserved just as freshly as it was revealed.
